Q. Why would I need one of these new devices?

A. To save yourself hours of valuable time – no more capturing

It’s not everyday that you come across a device that will literally revolutionize an industry. I can hardly believe such an item exists. A device that will absolutely, positively save us time and money? It’s been a long ride, but it is finally here.

A few years back we had the opportunity to use the original DTE (Direct To Edit) device, the much larger FS-1. It was quickly dismissed as a sucessful product due to its bulky size, cumbersome interface and high-price. Fast-forward to today to slicker display and controls, half the cost, and a much smaller unit weighing in at less than a pound and 1.5″ thick.

With it’s cool blue backlit display illuminating the on-screen menu, one can navigate via front 4-way arrow buttons to choose or “select” the recording format. Depending on your editing system, you’ll choose from RawDV, AVI Type 1, AVI Type 2, AVI Type 2 24p, Matrox AVI, Canopus AVI, QuickTime or QuickTime 24 (for cameras such as the XL2 and DVX100a). For Final Cut Pro, of course you’ll choose QuickTime. Next, plug the 6-pin FireWire cable into the top of the unit and 4-pin into your camera.

Once you hit the camera’s record button you’ll notice REC on the FS-4 along with the clip name (number) and its duration. The timecode on the files will match the timecode going to tape. Although you can record tapeless, I’m still not giving up on tape, I’ll use it as piece-of-mind knowing that I still have the shot should disaster strike.

Next, you’ll use the menu to switch the FS-4 to HDD mode which will allow you to connect to the computer. Once connected via a single 6pin-6pin FireWire cable, all of the QuickTime files (or whatever format you chose) are revealed on the drive and ready to drag-and-drop into your favorite editing application. It is literally as simple as that.

As most editors do, I find myself spending a minimum of 2 hours per week capturing. At $75 per hour that equals $600 per month in studio time. At this rate the FS-4 will pay for itself in just a little over 1 month! This is best device to hit the video market since the first DV camera!

Weighing about one pound and only 1.5 inches thick, the FireStore FS-4 Portable DTE Recorder brings Direct To Edit Technology to your DV or HDV handheld camcorder. Whether mounted directly to your camcorder or clipped to your belt, the FS-4 is designed to excel in the field.

The first DV disk recorder with Direct to Edit (DTE) Technology designed for hand held camcorders. Combines a small, rugged & shock proof chassis with professional performance. Once you have finished shooting, FS-4HD and FS-4ProHD Pro are mounted to your Mac or PC editing system like a normal FireWire hard disk drive.
