  • Genie and Intego Backup Manager Pro incl.
  • Time Machine Compatible
So, now you can have a single enclosure, two-drive system that works with two partitions to create both a Fast and Safe drive to work from. The two drives mount to your desktop and one is 200MB/sec Fast and the other Safe volume is capable of around 100MB/sec. Keep in mind that if one of the two drives in the enclosure fails (dies), you will lose the data on your “Fast” volume, and the “Safe” volume will be ok. The way I have mine set up is to utilize the “Fast” volume for my work and use Time Machine to automatically backup the data to the Safe drive. If the footage is really crucial, I’ll hand copy it over to the Safe drive. The new way of formatting is called Mixed Mode by LaCie, others call it RAID 1 and 0. I think it’s cool.

RAID 0 + 1 Storage Solution, Be both Fast and Safe! from Guy Cochran on Vimeo.

The LaCie 2big Quadra is the most complete 2-disk RAID solution for digital libraries, creative pro and office workstations that need storage/backup capacity, speed, and advanced data protection. It’s easy to use, and comes with two extractable, lockable and hot-swappable disks in RAID 1 mode. With burst transfer rates as high as 225MB/s** (eSATA 3Gb/s) in RAID 0, the 2big Quadra is ideal for high speed-demanding applications like audio/video projects (DV and SD video playback or 2D/3D imaging). It functions as a complete solution for data protection, and comes with advanced backup software with computer recovery options: Genie Backup Manager Pro™ for Windows® and Intego Backup Manager Pro™ for Mac® users. The sturdy, aluminum heat sink design—with 60% more surface area for heat dissipation—keeps it quiet and safe. This versatile solution offers various space-saving configurations—upright, horizontal, stacked, or rack-mounted. The LaCie Shortcut Button on the front launches any backup or library application of your choice in just one push.

From page 17 of the User Manual

In Mixed mode, the two physical disks are combined so that two logical volumes mount simultaneously on the desktop:

One Safe volume (RAID 1) where data is automatically mirrored on each physical disk. This volume uses 50% of the available capacity of each disk (the available capacity cannot exceed 50% of the lowest-capacity single disk).

Important info: If one physical disk fails, the data of the SAFE volume is available on the second disk. Only 25% of full capacity is protected by mirroring. In this case, data on the Fast (RAID 0) volume will be lost.

One Fast volume (RAID 0) enables the user to work with the high speed of RAID 0. Applications

Provides two volumes for different data security needs.

Only 75% of total formatted capacity is available due to mirroring on the Safe volume

Comments : *Hot-swapping is not possible in RAID 0 and concatenation modes.
**Maximum interface transfer rate = theoretical bus bandwidth, whereas burst transfer rate = maximum drive speed. Performance depends on the RAID mode selected and burst transfer rates vary from one computer to another and may vary slightly from one drive to another. Average speed is usually lower depending on host configuration.
***The LaCie Shortcut Button feature is available via FireWire and USB but not eSATA.
****1TB (Terabyte) = 1000GB. 1GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. Total accessible capacity varies depending upon operating environment (typically 5-10% less). Capacity varies depending upon RAID mode.
These measurements are indications may vary by +/- 10%.
Windows 2000, Windows XP 32-bit, and versions of Mac OS X before 10.4.6 do not recognize partitions of more than 2TB.
